Dr. Onur Tümtürk Awarded a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship at the MIT Senseable City Lab

Dr. Onur Tümtürk has been awarded a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship, funding nine months of research at the MIT Senseable City Lab. Founded in 2004 and directed by Carlo Ratti, the lab is a multidisciplinary group studying the interface between cities, people and technologies, and one of the world's leading centers for data-driven urban science. He carries out the fellowship there from September 2025 to July 2026.

At MIT, the research develops a computational framework for measuring urban form through morphometrics, with a particular focus on UNESCO World Heritage cities and what gives their fabric its distinctive character. It quantifies the spatial patterns of these historic urban environments in order to describe, compare and ultimately help safeguard the qualities that define them.

In parallel, the work applies computer vision to street-level imagery to study pedestrian perception and behaviour, reading how people experience and move through urban space. Together, the two strands connect the measurable form of the city with the lived experience of those who inhabit it, extending Dr. Tümtürk's work on urban morphology into new computational and perceptual territory.
